Subject
John Stow (1525-1605) was a tailor, self-educated historian, and antiquarian. He amassed a large library of manuscripts and printed books, which he used as sources for his chronicles of English history – Chronicles of England (1580) and Annales of England (first published 1592). Summaries and abridgements of these works offered cheaper, more portable, guides to English history.
Description
17th century calf binding. Gilt tooled centrepiece incorporating the coat of arms of the City of London; cornerpieces of interlacing designs; and semis of a small floreate cross - all within a double filleted gilt tooled frame. Flat spine, gilt tooled. With gilt tooling to board edges. Evidence of ties.

Continuation by Edmund Howes (active 1607-1631), who worked as an assistant to Stow from 1602. Both Stow and Howes received annual payments from the Merchant Taylors’ Company whilst working on the chronicles.
