These anonymous conduct books are usually attributed to the Royalist divine and provost of Eton College, Richard Allestree (1619-1681).

Description

Late 17th century gilt-tooled black goatskin binding. Bookblock edges in gilt. Marbled endpapers. The tools used on this binidng appear to most closely resemble those attributed to the group of binders known as the 'Queens' binders', active in London between around 1670 and 1700.

Calligraphic inscription on front endpaper: "Elizabeth Beale Her Book". In pencil on previous page, faintly visible: "Eliz B". According to a note on the facing page, Elizabeth was the daughter of John Rogers of Otle[?], married Miles Beale of Newent, and died in 1732 at the age of 37.
