Description
16th century blind tooled calf binding, bound at the workshop of Garrett Godfrey, a Dutch-born binder active in Cambridge from the early 16th century until his death in 1539. Covers with rolls number 3 and 4 of George J. Gray's, The Earlier Cambridge Stationers & Bookbinders and the First Cambridge Printer. Roll 3 is composed of four compartments - a turreted gateway, a fleur-de-lis, a pomegrantae and a rose stamps, each surmounted by a crown, with binder's initials "G.G." in a small panel between the rose and the turreted gateway ; roll 4 of quatrefoils within lozenges. Remains of fore-edge ties. Bookblock edges sprinkled red. The spine and corners have been skillfully repaired.

Purchased by the University of Liverpool in 1939 from Quaritch, bookseller, for £9.9.0, using funds provided by Mrs Clara Hornby.
