Description

16th century English panel stamped calf binding over wooden boards. Upper cover panel with emblems of the passion and inscription "Redemptoris mundi arma" ; on the lower cover a stamp divided into two compartments containing the arms of England and the Tudor rose. Both stamps include the cypher of the London bookbinder, John Reynes (-1544). Sewn on three supports. Clasp running from upper to lower board (straps missing). Titling in ink on bookblock fore-edge: "E[?]ple pli". Paper manuscript binder's waste. Red leather spine label with titling in gilt.

Binding by the bookbinder, bookseller and publisher, John Reynes (-1544). Born Jan Rijens in Wageningen, Gueldres, in the Low Countries, he was active in London during the 1520s-1540s.

Marginal notes and underlinings in several 16th/17th century hands, primarily in first half of text, and on front and rear endpapers.

Inscription on front endpaper: "Thomas Downe pretium 00-02-00".

Purchased by the University of Liverpool in 1939 from E.P. Goldschmidt bookseller for £12.0.0, using funds provided by Mrs Clara Hornby.
